8 Ways To Get Your Creativity Flowing

“You’re ready. Start making stuff.”
― Austin Kleon, Steal Like an Artist

1.) READ WIDELY : Explore books, articles, blogs, and publications on a variety of topics.

2.) BECOME AN IDEAS FACTORY: Make daily ideas lists.  They could be “ten business ideas”, “ten book ideas”, “ten ideas for a board game” . The topic could be anything. The point is to make a habit of getting your creativity muscle working.
“They won’t all be good ideas, I won’t have 3650 good ideas a year, but I try and make sure they’re as good as they could possibly be.” – James Altucher

3.) CONSUME ARTS & CULTURE: Read poetry and short stories, go to the theatre/art galleries/museums, attend live music/comedy, watch films with subtitles…It all adds to your creative experiences bank.

4.) COLLABORATE: Brainstorm ideas with colleagues/friends/fellow creatives.

5.) EXPLORE DIFFERENT CREATIVE OUTLETS: Try other forms of creativity. Take a class in writing, painting, music, acting, photography, cooking, spoon-carving…

6.)  GET MOVING: Run, walk, dance, hop, skip, jump…Do whatever you love to get those endorphins going and clear some headspace for creativity.

7.) GET OUTSIDE: Go for a walk, immerse yourself in nature, take a route you haven’t before, be mindful of your surroundings. The motion of walking, together with the change in environment, can help shift your mind into a more creative space.

8.) JUST BEGIN. My number one tip for creativity. Do the thing.

And journalling of course. JOURNAL. JOURNAL. JOURNAL.

“Read deeply. Stay open. Continue to wonder.”
